The key to making money on the internet is a two step process I call Divert and Convert. Every profit seeking website on the internet uses this process (whether they realize it or not).

• Step 1: Divert Traffic from one location (point A) to another (point B).

• Step 2: Convert the diverted traffic from Step 1 into Profit.

There are many different ways to divert traffic including:

• Pay Per Click
• Article Marketing
• Press Releases
• Links from Other Websites
• Affiliate Promotions
• Email Lists

Just to name a few.

Likewise, there are many ways to convert this diverted traffic into profit including:

• Promoting Affiliate Products
• Hosting Content Network Ads (like Adsense)
• Building an Email List (which you can then use to promote products)
• Selling Your Own Product
• Pay Per Action
• Pay Per Lead
• etc., etc.

There are almost an unlimited number of combinations of divert and convert techniques that you can use to make a profit. All you have to do is figure out a winning combination and you will make money -- guaranteed.

This may sound a bit simplistic but "Divert and Convert" really is all you need to know to make money on the internet. Everything else is just window dressing.

Sure, it's nice to have -- and be able to use -- Audio and Video and Autoresponders and Tracking Software and all the other wizbang gadgets and gizmos. And to be sure, most of these things will help you make more money IF you already have a winning Divert and Convert process in place. BUT if you ain't got the Divert and Convert process working you're not going to make any money.

Now you know the real secret to making money on the internet. The same process every single profit generating website on the planet uses.

Now, lets look at an example:

Credit Cards are a multi-billion dollar industry and online marketers are making tens of millions of dollars promoting credit card offers by diverting traffic from Google and other search engines to their own websites.

In case you didn't know, you can partner with credit card companies and earn money for each approved Cardmember Account referred. For example, Discover Card pays up to $40.00 for each approved application.

But there is a problem: It's easy to sign up as a credit card affiliate. And it's easy to put up a simple website to allow people to apply for the credit card which earns you an affiliate commission. But, you will probably hit a brick wall when you try to divert traffic to your new money making site. You see, the Credit Card market is extremely competitive.

The image above shows the number of websites that are indexed in Google for the keyword phrase "credit cards". That's over 56 million competitors! Trying to get your website on the first or second (or even third) page of Google for the keyword phrase, "Credit Cards" will be an exercise in futility. And unless you are on one of the first pages in Google for that keyword phrase you will not be able to divert the traffic you need to make a profit to your website.

And don't even think about Pay Per Click. There are over 40 pages of Google Adword Ads and over 55 Overture ads for the phrase "credit cards". The top spot in Google for the term "credit cards" costs $12.77... per click!

In a nutshell if you want to make any money in the credit card market you better have a plan to divert traffic to your site. Otherwise your site will get lost in a sea of competitors.

But there is better way...

Take a look at this phrase in Google: "credit cards gas rewards"

Now, how hard do you think it would be to get on the first page on Google for the keyword phrase "credit cards gas rewards" when you only have 51 competitors? Let me tell you:

Not Very Hard!

Now, you're not going to get thousands and thousands of hits to your website for this phrase. But, you don't need to. Because you can convert a high percentage of the searchers you do get into profits.

You see, people who type in the keyword phrase "credit cards gas rewards" are looking for something very specific. They're looking for a credit card that gives them cash rewards for gas purchases. (Discover Card gives 5% for gas purchases) And because they're looking for something very specific they're much more likely to sign up for an offer that matches what they're searching for instead of just a generic offer for "credit cards."

Put simple, "Under-the-Radar" keyword phrases like "credit cards gas rewards" are much easier to rank for in the search engines (especially Google) and they have much better conversion percentages because they are specific to what the searcher is looking for.
